Sunrise Services employs the philosophy that all persons, regardless of disability, are
entitled to emotional safety and freedom from harm. We believe difficult behaviors are the
result of unmet needs. As needs are met in more positive ways and training is provided in more
effective behavior, these difficult behaviors will naturally decrease. We also strive to keep
our supports free of conditions that promote negative behaviors.
Our supports use positive behavior support rather than chemical or physical restraints,
environmental deprivation, extended isolation, or aversive behavior intervention. Techniques
that employ these methods to control behavior, or other negative methods such as punishment,
fear, pain, or humiliation are not employed or tolerated by Sunrise Services. Such techniques
violate the rights of individuals with disabilities, and diminish all concerned.
Positive support techniques include arranging a comfortable, safe and responsive environment
that supports positive change; encouraging skill development; facilitating participation in
community activities; providing opportunities to form strong, positive relationships;
providing access to medical care and mental health treatment; redirecting ineffective
behaviors; and providing natural and logical reinforcement.
Our goal in assisting people with disabilities is to foster individual growth and increased
opportunities for self-determination, personal choice, and independent action. Our emphasis is
on improving the overall quality of life. An individual person-centered plan with both
long-range and short-range objectives is developed with the help of the family, the
individual, and supporting professionals. Clear, attainable goals are set and supports
designed and applied in a caring, humane, and dignified manner.
