Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving
(also known as Basic Training):

Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving is the DSHS curriculum that meets the requirements for basic training. RFCG is a very practical and basic 28-hour classroom course in caregiving. The class focuses on correctly performing basic caregiving personal care tasks, client rights, important communication and problem solving skills in caregiving, and protecting the health and safety of clients.

Written materials can be provided in Cambodian, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Instructors accommodate learning disabilities and interpreters (including friends or family members) during classroom training but cannot assist with testing. Classes are taught in English or Russian / Ukrainian.

Scoring of tests and skills is completed at the end of the class. Successful students are issued a certificate at the end of the class.

Modified Fundamentals of Caregiving
(also known as Modified Basic)

This is a self-study course, with required classroom testing. Modified may be taken only by students (please note Nursing Assistants Registered do NOT qualify) who can document that they have successfully completed training and have been licensed in Washington State as a:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Nursing Assistant Certified
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Nurse Practitioner

You must have been given the training materials from Sunrise to test with us. If you have been given the materials from another source, you will be required to enroll and obtain materials from Sunrise before scheduling the test date. Tests are scored on the same day and successful students are issued a certificate. Interpreters may not assist with testing.

Nurse Delegation: Core

Prepares you to accept nurse-delegated tasks, tasks previously only to be performed by a licensed person. CORE includes medication administration, your role as a Nursing Assistant and the role of the Registered Nurse Delegator. Please note that it is a DSHS requirement that this course is only offered in English. Interpreters are not able to assist with testing.

You do not need to repeat the course to continue to be qualified to be delegated. You may complete the course in a classroom setting or as a self-study program.

Nurse Delegation: Classroom Training

The workbook is given out at the beginning of class. Tests are scored at the end of the class and successful students are issued certificates.

Nurse Delegation Self-Study Program

Upon receiving enrollment information and payment, the video and course workbook will be issued and a test date scheduled. Students must complete the practice exercises in the workbook. You must have been given the training materials from Sunrise to test with us. If you have been given the materials from another source, you will be required to enroll and obtain materials from Sunrise before scheduling your test date.


Nurse Delegation: Special Focus on Diabetes

Nurse Delegation for Nursing Assistants: Special Focus on Diabetes is a 3-hour course that is the first step in preparing a nursing assistant (registered or certified) to perform insulin injections as a delegated task. Please note that that it is a DSHS requirement that this course is only offered in English. Interpreters are not able to assist with testing. Nursing assistants must have successfully completed Nurse Delegation Core (see above) before taking this training. You do not need to repeat the course to continue to be qualified to be delegated. You may complete the course in a classroom setting or as a selfstudy program.

Nurse Delegation Self-Study Program

Designed for caregivers who prefer to learn in the privacy of their own home. Upon receiving enrollment information and payment, the video and course workbook will be issued and a test date scheduled. Students must complete the practice exercises in the workbook. You must have been given the training materials from Sunrise to test with us. If you have been given the materials from another source, you will be required to enroll and obtain materials from Sunrise before scheduling your test date.


CPR/1st Aid

Approved for all Adult Family Homes, Group Homes and Certified Programs for the Developmentally Disabled, and all community caregivers. Class includes training in adult/child/infant CPR/1st Aid and use of automated defibrillators. We offer multiple classes each month. Successful students received documentation of completion at the end of the class. Certification is for 2 years.

AFH Mental Health Care Specialty Course

This 8-hour course is the State developed AFH Specialty curriculum which is designed to provide the required education for Providers (Managers) and Caregivers who own or work with residents with Mental Health issues. This course provides in depth training for the specialized needs of these residents. A written test will be administered after successful completion of the required course hours. A passing grade is required for Certification to be issued. Interpreters may not assist with testing.

AFH Dementia Care Specialty Course

Continuing Education (CE)

All our CE courses have been approved by DSHS and are designed specifically to meet the needs of Home Care Agencies, AFH, Certified DD Programs, Boarding Homes and Private Pay. Each course satisfies your annual 10-hour CE requirements. New courses are developed each year.

Our Continuing Education Home Study courses are DSHS approved. You may complete the course in a classroom setting or as a Home Study program.

Sunrise understands that it is difficult to re-arrange a busy life to fit the required 10 hours of Continuing Education every year. We offer a convenient Continuing Education Self-Study course, which allows students to obtain the needed training in the comfort of home.
